A degree in Business Information Systems opens doors to a wide variety of careers within many different industry sectors. Because almost every sector of modern business is driven to some extent by technology, each sector has a requirement for graduates who have a knowledge of both business and technology. Employers look to hire Business Information Systems graduates because of the mixture of business and technology skills and also the people skills that you acquire on the programme. Companies want to hire people with a broad range of skills, able to address issues from a number of perspectives.

BIS graduates find work in many places: in banks, technology companies, insurance companies, mobile phone and cable television organisations, airlines and government departments. The skills you develop allow you to work in any industry sector, in many different roles.

In a recent survey of our BIS graduates, over 87% found full-time employment in a job associated with their degree: a few others went travelling the world!

Where might I find my first job?

Perhaps you may start in a technical role, as a software tester or multimedia developer. Or you may find your first job in the technology department of a financial institution or focusing on e-business while working for an airline, perhaps working as a web developer. You may work for the government, or in a consultancy firm, helping clients to drive their businesses forward through using technology to manage information effectively. As you gain experience in the workplace, you have the potential to become an invaluable asset to any organization in any industry sector: because you understand both business and technology, you can become a major decision-maker, who can drive innovation.

With a B.Sc. in Business Information Systems, your job title can be very varied:

• business analyst - reviewing an existing business, defining the optimal technology that should be used to drive that business, looking at the financial implications of your proposal, defining how the technology should be used to maximise its effectiveness
• software tester or software developer - involved in software development
• web developer, Internet consultant or E-Business specialist - all helping organisations to exploit the opportunities of the Internet
• technology manager - managing the range of hardware, software and networking equipment in any organisation
• IS consultants and IS managers - working with large organisations to manage and leverage technology for the benefit of the organisations

The skills and knowledge you acquire on this programme can be used in any business environment, allowing you to move between industry sectors, in many different roles.

Will I find a job?

Employment prospects for BIS graduates are very good. Businesses demand a good business knowledge combined with an IT competency.  Because you are not limited to opportunities in the IT sector only, you can use your combination of business and technical skills in many sectors – the economy needs graduates with this well-rounded portfolio of skills.
