My name is Ailish Kelly and I am a 4th year BIS student at NUI Galway. Previous to my enrollment at NUI Galway I was attending another university but discovered the course I was participating in was not for me. I then moved on to employment in a financial institution and realised that I had a keen interest in business and I decided to pursue a career in this area.
I researched many business courses in many universities. I was looking for a business course that also involved IT. Having studied both disciplines graduates are more employable. Business Information Systems emerged as the most suitable course for me and it was the best decision I've ever made to apply for this course.
The BIS degree offers a range of subjects such as marketing, accounting, information systems as well as organisational management and change. As a BIS student I have gained an insight into many business and IT subjects. In comparison to the Commerce degree we gain more knowledge and experience in relation to management and IT subjects.
I have completed many individual as well as group assignments since I started BIS. My team work and communication skills have vastly improved as a result. Also, I have improved many of my soft skills, all of which can be taken with me when I enter the corporate world as a BIS graduate.
All of these skills and experiences would not have been possible without the help of my close knit community of staff/lectures and fellow students. Being part of such a small class means we are very close and know our lecturers on a personal level. This has been a huge advantage to me as I have taken my lectures up on their open door policy many times over the last few years when I needed help.
BIS offers work placement which is part of the PEP (Professional Experience Programme) for semester 2 of 3rd year. All BIS students are placed in many well known multinational organisations. Our lectures and members of the PEP programme are more than helpful in organising interviews and putting us in contact with different companies. I was employed by SAP Galway for my internship. This was a great experience for me as I was able to apply the knowledge I had learned at university and also improve on my inter-personal, teamwork and communications skills. I experienced life at a mulitnational organisation and have made many useful contacts as a result.
I am currently in the process of completing my final year project (FYP). This is a group project and we have been working on it since September. As a group, we are creating a tool set that small-to-medium enterprises can use. It will help them in the implementation of open-source collaborative tools and technologies within their organisations.
Life as BIS student in Galway has been a life changing experience for me. Moving to Galway from Offaly was life changing in itself as you can imagine but I couldn't have chosen a better city. I made many good friends in college which has enabled me to build up a huge network of friends.
I am currently concentrating on getting a good final year result. My next step will be to either apply for a postgraduate course or look for employment. Either option is well within my reach as I will have a well recognised degree under my belt.
