You will find employment: there are many employment opportunities for M.Sc. ISM graduates today. Although there was a decline in employment opportunities in the IT industry a few years ago, the situation has now stabilised. Importantly, the combination of business and technical skills that you acquire on the M.Sc. ISM means that you are not relying solely on the IT sector for employment but will find opportunities across all industry sectors, where you will use your business and technical knowledge in a broad business context. In recent years, the majority of M.Sc. ISM graduates seeking employment received job offers within three months of completing the programme.
We asked some recent graduates to tell us about what they did after completing their studies. Here is what they had to say:
Kevin Donnellan, graduate of 2007:
I am working in the I.T. Department for Dell Computers as a Technical Business Analyst.
I work in an IT team that works on Dell's Order Management System for all of Europe using applications such as Oracle Databases and Oracle Forms along with some XML Coding. I also am required to write up some SRS documents on new processes and changes in the system for example.
I think the course was very relevant to my current position and even
with my good base IT Degree I think I would not have got this job
without this qualification. It was a very good course that added some
vital business elements to my basic IT degree that is definitely needed
to get a good job in today's IT Industry.
Lorraine O'Brien, graduate of 2007:
I'm working in AIB Bankcentre in Dublin as an Information Analyst in the Data Quality Team which is part of the Enterprise Business Architecture division.
I think the course was 100% the reason I got the job, prior
to the course I would not have been in any way qualified for the role,
as it is heavily centered around databases, datawarehouses and SQL
which I had never encountered before. NUI Galway BIS graduates are
definitely highly regarded in AIB. I would recommend the
course to anyone interested, the lectures and tutors were all very
helpful and approachable.
Padraic Nicholson, graduate of 2007:
I am currently working for Pramerica Systems Ireland Ltd as an Oracle Financial Analyst. When I originally applied to the company it was not for the role I am currently working in, but when management saw my qualifications they reassigned me. I would highly recommend the course because it gets you noticed and is eye catching. Since starting my job, two of the company directors commented that they have seen few graduates with the same range of skills that this course in NUI Galway gave me.
Padraic Boyle, graduate of 2007:
I've been working as a systems developer in Graham Technology for the past couple of months. They are based in Glasgow and have an office in Galway. I'm working on a project in Melbourne at the moment.
I felt that the course was focused a lot more than my undergraduate degree (in Electronic Engineering) on project work, which has been a great help to me in my current job.
Noel Marsden says:
I obtained a permanent, full-time entry level position with Meteor, as an IT operator. The job itself is heavily database-oriented and it also allows me the opportunity to specialise in the longer term in Internet development, UNIX or database administration.
The course was useful for me as it allowed me to get an IT qualification, and Meteor were particularly interested in the subjects involving SQL/Database, telecommunications, software and Internet and multimedia development.
Susan Murphy tells her story:
A former NUI Galway BIS graduate, now an operations manager in a software company, was hiring in Dublin and contacted one of the lecturers in NUI Galway, knowing that a BIS graduate was just what her organisation needed. I secured the position and now work as a support consultant on a leading accounting software package. When I help customers with their queries, they are delighted to find a support person who understands both the business issue and the software problem. One customer recently said to me "It is such a pleasure to talk to someone on a support desk who actually understands what I am trying to achieve with this software package."
Recent M.Sc. ISM graduates quickly found positions in many different industry sectors: as business analysts in the financial services, as Web developers in a variety of organisations involved in e-commerce, as IT support specialists in the public sector, as developers of enterprise database solutions in the retail industry, as software testers in the healthcare sector, and as IT support consultants in telecommunications companies.
M.Sc. ISM graduates often move on to become IT technology managers, managing the entire IT network in large organisations, e-commerce or technology consultants with leading consultancy companies, and business analysts, working with technology companies, banking and financial services organisations. On the other hand, a number of very successful small companies have been set up by M.Sc. ISM graduates, where the range of skills and knowledge acquired on the course was a key factor in ensuring that the fledgling company did not flounder in the early years. As one such graduate put it "I was the technology manager, the business analyst, the Web developer and the managing director in those early years".
Many of our graduates are now senior managers in large organisations, in the technology, healthcare and entertainment sectors. In some cases, M.Sc. ISM graduates lead teams of highly-skilled technical personnel, bringing their overall management and business skills into play to compliment the technical knowledge of their teams.
