These are three very different challenges that concern most employers at different times. Here at NUI Galway, the Business Information Systems Group might be able to help you on all three fronts.
We offer one undergraduate and three postgraduate programmes in Business Information Systems, where students acquire a unique combination of skills, learning about both business and technology. In particular, students learn how to use technology to drive business forward, to exploit the power of the latest technology, to be the architect of innovation.
Perhaps one of our graduates might be just the new hire you require or perhaps one of these programmes may meet the training and career development needs of some of your current employees. To see for yourself the calibre of our graduates, why don't you consider getting involved in our Professional Experience Programme, where one of our students undertakes a work placement with you? Our B. Sc. in Business Information System students are available for work placement from January until August in their third year. By this stage of their university programme, our students have covered an extensive range of business and technical issues, including programming, Internet and multimedia application development, database systems, network and communications and E-business, as well as software quality assurance, systems analysis and business organisation and management. The students complete many practical technical projects over the first three years of the programme and get plenty of experience working on teams and delivering to deadlines.
The Advisory Board to this undergraduate programme, consisting of senior managers from a cross-section of industry sectors, advises us on the content of the various courses, ensuring that the students are learning skills that are required in the workplace. The work placement is paid and students are available for interview from September in third year. There is also the potential to collaborate further with the student and the university through the student's final year project.
Check out the Considering undergraduate section of our web site for more information about this unique undergraduate programme.
Our MBS in Electronic Commerce students are available for work placement from September in the second year of their programme, for a period 7 to 10 months. All students have obtained a strong Commerce or related business degree before starting the MBS. The first year of the MBS develops the students' business and analytical skills and introduces the students to a wide range of technical expertise, including Internet and multimedia application development, database systems, interactive programming, Internet technologies and web programming.
The students also complete a thesis, which is usually connected to their work placement. This thesis may present an opportunity for collaboration between you, the student and the university.
Many employers have offered our postgraduate students permanent positions at the end of the work placement. The work placement is a great opportunity for you to get to know a student, to see for yourself whether the student is suited to your organisation and whether the student will bring knowledge and skills to your organisation that will be of benefit.
Check out of section about the MBS in Electronic Commerce for more information about this programme.
As an employer, it is likely that you are constantly looking for appropriate training and professional development opportunities to keep the skills of your employees up-to-date and to prepare your organisation for future growth. It is difficult to find the appropriate training, at the right cost, and delivered in a way that will maximise the opportunity for your employee to transfer what is learned back to the workplace.
Have you consider sponsoring some of your employees to complete the Higher Diploma in Systems Analysis (DSA) on a part-time basis, over two years? This would require attendance at lectures on only one day per week each year. The part-time nature of the programme allows your employee to continue to contribute to your organisation while getting valuable training and also gaining a postgraduate qualification that is highly regarded in industry. But the part-time nature of the programme also allows the employee to practice and implement what he or she is learning on a gradual basis throughout the two years. There is no better way to ensure that the employee grasps the new skills and it also maximises the transfer of knowledge back to the workplace.
The Higher Diploma in Systems Analysis (DSA)is excellent value for money: to obtain a similar level of technical expertise through an industry-based training programme would cost a lot more. Check out the DSA section of our web site for more information.
